6 July 2001 WCD Releases Polish Overview in National Launch "Zapory A Rozwój" - Synteza: Multi-stakeholder collaborative approach to translation becomes a model for future efforts and partnerships under DDU 6 July 2001 Warsaw, Poland – In a novel partnership, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Global Water Partnership (GWP), academics, and civil engineers, in cooperationwith the people, businesses and government of Poland, today launched the landmark 'Overview' Report of the World Commission on Dams (WCD) – in their own language.
The Polish version of the Report makes the findings and recommendations of the WCD available and useful to a wider constituency of more than 2,000 individuals planning to use the Report to turn dam controversies of the past into development consensus for the future.
The translation can be read online here, or downloaded from this page as a PDF file.
“The act of translation can be difficult,” said James Workman, senior advisor on the Commission. “But by coming together to review and verify the sensitive words in the Report, all constituencies can unite in order to review and verify the even more difficult work on the landscape.”
The document is the first specifically national translation of the WCD summary of Dams and Development, A New Framework for Decision-Making, from English into Polish. It is an independent publication and a model venture involving both the spirit and practical efforts of a truly multi-stakeholder approach. It forms the basis for future collaboration within and between constituents.
The initial Polish translation was made by Jacek Jankowski and Mikolaj Golachowski.
To verify the Polish text from expert point of view, we received critical help from:
Prof. Janusz Kindler (President of the Polish Committee of Global Water Partnership – GWP-Poland; Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Warsaw Politechnic);
Dr Andrzej Kowalczewski (freshwater ecologist, Faculty of Biology at Warsaw University; member of the Polish Hydrobiological Association), and
M.Sc. Adam Jacewicz (civil engineer, former employee of "Hydroprojekt" - the largest Polish consulting firm on river engineering, board member of the Polish Association of Consultant Engineers, member of the Polish Civil Engineering Association.
Sincere thanks go to the Editor „OIKOS” as well as all who helped in preparation of the final version of the Overview.
Those who contributed to publishing the Polish version of this overview are: Larry Haas (Team Leader and former Senior Advisor in the World Commission on Dams), Gernant Magnin (Senior Campaigner of the WWF Living Waters Campaign), as well as Jamie Skinner and James Workman, also former Senior Advisors on the WCD Secretariat.
The publishing process was co-ordinated by Jacek Engel and Marta Kaczynska from the WWF Country Office in Poland (www.wwf.pl).
